Islamabad: Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairman Imran Khan on Monday urged Pakistan Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Sikander Sultan Raja to resign and reiterated his demand that fresh elections be conducted in the country.
After his party's victory in the Sunday’s Punjab by-elections, Khan in his address today said: "There is only one way (to rid the country of political instability)… free and fair election. When they were removing me, I had announced general elections but courts overturned my decision. I still believe it was the right call," he said while addressing the nation.
PTI took back control of the province winning 15 provincial assembly seats out of the 20. According to unofficial and preliminary results, the ruling Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) could only bag four seats.
Calling Chief Election Commissioner Sikander Sultan Raja "dishonest", Imran in his victory speech asked him to resign as, according to him, free and fair elections cannot take place in the country under his supervision.
"Under this ECP, free and fair elections cannot take place. The country's biggest party does not trust it. I ask CEC to resign. We have no confidence in you. You're a biased person and connected with a party," he alleged.
Khan also accused the coalition government of using "every tactic to ensure that we (PTI) lose the polls."
Shedding light on the current economic situation in the country, he said that it was an outcome of the political crisis.
“Our reserves have shrunk by half since PML-N came to power. Despite the agreement with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) in sight, our rupee is declining,” he said.
He highlighted that amid the crises, the only way out was free and fair elections.
