Earlier regimes didn't value time: Modi

Kanpur, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday took a dig at earlier governments in Uttar Pradesh, saying they did not realise the value of time and that the present administration is trying to make up for lost time.

"Earlier governments did not realise the importance of time. Development of UP was not their priority, their commitment was not to people of UP," Modi said after inaugurating the Kanpur Metro Rail project and the Bina-Panki multi-product pipeline here.

The Prime Minister also accused the earlier governments of not paying attention to non-metropolitan cities.

"The difference is clear... Our government is prioritising development of non-metropolitan cities in terms of connectivity, electricity, water supply, education and health institutions," Modi said.

"Those in the earlier governments had a mindset to only loot people thinking that they had got a lottery for five years. Our government works on the principal of 'Sabka Sath, Sabka Vikas'."

In an apparent reference to money found after IT raids on perfume trader Piyush Jain, who has been linked with the Samajwadi Party, Modi said: "The perfume of corruption was spreading in the whole of UP. Now they are silent."

On Kanpur Metro Rail, the Prime Minister said: "Before 2014, the total length of metro in UP was 9 km. Between 2014-17 it was 18 km. Now, with Kanpur Metro, the length is over 90 km."
