Kollam: A 22-year-old youth was seriously injured when a policeman hurled down him using his lathi while conducting vehicle checking at Kanjirathummoodu near Kadakkal in this district on Thursday. The seriously injured, Siddique hailing from Kizhakkumbhagam near Chithara, was admitted to the Medical College Hospital in Thiruvananthapuram, sources said. The youth who was riding a motorcycle has been hurled down when he did not stop the vehicle during the vehicle checking.
As the youth lost the control, he hit another vehicle carrying Sabarimala pilgrims and fell on the road sustaining serious head injury. Though he was shifted to the nearest Government Taluk Hospital at Kadakkal, the police left him in the hospital without ensuring proper medical assistance. Later, his relatives who reached the spot brought him to the Medical College Hospital. In protest against the police excesses, local people blocked the traffic of Parippally-Madathara road for more than two hours.
Following which, CPO Chandramohan, who attacked the youth, was suspended and two other policemen, ASI Shibulal and CPO Siraj, were transferred with immediate effect by Rural SP Harisankar. Earlier, the DGP had issued a circular instructing policemen to avoid standing in the middle of the road to stop the speeding vehicles in the name of helmet hunt.
