Kannur: For the second time in a week, a raid was conducted on Kannur Central Jail on Monday night and unearthed banned tobacco products, mobile phones and its allied accessories illegally kept by the inmates in the prisoners blocks. The jail officials said ten mobiles including five smart phones, four power banks, mobile chargers and batteries, and banned tobacco products were seized from the 2,5,6, and 7th blocks in the raid conducted by the Jail Superintendent T Baburaj and other jail officials.
The seized products were concealed under roof tiles and on walls, jail officials said. It was on June 22 in the wee hours, Director General of Prisons (DGP) Rishiraj Singh accompanied by District Police Chief Pratheesh Kumar conducted a raid in all blocks at Kannur central jail and seized three mobile phones, sim cards, knives, ganja, transistor radio sets, and banned tobacco products. They also seized weapons including hammer, scissors and iron rods which were illegally kept by the jail inmates during the raid.
The DGP on Monday declared a cash prize of Rs 2,500 for the jail officials who seized mobile phones from jail inmates with an intention to put an end to the illegal use of mobile phones among prisoners inside the jail blocks.
