Railways'' EGoS to develop 50 sts, permit pvt operators to run 150 trains with world class tech

New Delhi: Ministry of Railways has decided to constitute an Empowered Group of Secretaries(EGoS) for development of 50 Railway stations to world class standards and permit private passenger train operators to run 150 trains with world class technology over Indian Railways network. The move of the Railways comes close on the heels of NITI Aayog CEO Amitabh Kant seeking formation of an ''empowered group of secretaries'' to push forward the Rs 1 lakh crore project of Railways.

The Empowered Group will consist of Chief Executive Officer, NITI Aayog--Chairman; and there will be four Members, including Chairman of Railway Board; Secretary, Department of Economic Affairs; Secretary, Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs and Financial Commissioner(Railways), an order from the Railway Ministry said here on Thursday. The terms of reference of the EGoS will be approval of the bidding process along with Bid documents including RFQ/RFP and concession agreements. Monitor the bidding process and to take decisions to ensure the awards of projects in a time bound manner.

The tenure of EGoS shall be one year from the date of its constitution. The Headquarters of EGoS will be at New Delhi, the Ministry order added. In a letter written to Chairman of Railway Board V K Yadav, Mr Kant had criticised the prolonged delay in a station redevelopment project and also suggested that an empowered group consisting of various secretaries and concerned railway officials will help speed up the project in a "time bound manner".
