Malappuram: A seven year old boy from Malappuram, who had tested positive for West Nile fever died at Kozhikode Medical College hospital on Monday. The boy from AR Nagar, was undergoing treatment at the Medical College hospital for the past 10 days.
After the case was confirmed, a central team had visited the hospital to review the situation. The health authorities in Malappuram had taken necessary steps to prevent the spread of the virus as soon as the case was diagnosed.
The virus is transmitted to humans through mosquito bites. Fever, headache, nausea, vomiting, body aches, swollen lymph glands and skin rash are the symptoms of West Nile disease.
The central team which conducted inspections at AR Nagar and Venniyoor (the boy's maternal place), reported that the presence of Culex mosquitoes, which are responsible for spreading West Nile Virus is high at Venniyoor.
Mosquito samples collected from both the places were sent to virology institute, Alappuzha. Samples from birds collected from these localities will be send to a lab in Hisar, Haryana.
