(London, Jan 15,2019): The UK Parliament rejected on Tuesday the deal reached by London and Brussels on the UK withdrawal from the European Union. A total of 432 lawmakers voted against the deal, while only 202 members of the parliament supported it. In November, London and Brussels finally completed a draft agreement on Brexit after more than a year of negotiations.
The deal, however, faced massive criticism in the United Kingdom. Earlier in the day, the lawmakers have also rejected four amendments to the Brexit deal. The so-called Amendment F sought to give the United Kingdom the right to terminate the Irish border backstop without the need to secure the EU agreement.
The Amendment B demanded the government''s promise to stop the entire Brexit deal if it is clear by 2022 that Brussels was not going to end the Irish border backstop. The Amendment K called on Prime Minister Theresa May to delay Brexit from the set date - March 29 - and prevent withdrawal from the European Union with no deal.
The Amendment A proposed by the Labour Party was also aimed at preventing a no-deal Brexit and criticized May''s Brexit deal for the lack of guarantees that the United Kingdom would have a permanent customs union and single market with the European Union.
