PM talks to French President, discusses Afghanistan

New Delhi, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday held a telephonic conversation with French President Emmanuel Macron, and discussed the situation in Afghanistan.

"Spoke with my friend President Emmanuel Macron on the situation in Afghanistan," Mr Modi said in a tweet.

The Prime Minister and French President also discussed "closer collaboration" between the two countries in the Indo-Pacific.

"We also discussed closer collaboration between India and France in the Indo-Pacific. We place great value on our Strategic Partnership with France, including in the UNSC," Mr Modi added added.

The call comes a day before Mr Modi is to travel to the US, where among other issues, he will also discuss "restructuring" of multilateral institutions like the UNSC.

India is a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council, and has for long been seeking a permanent place in the council which at present has China, France, Russia, the United Kingdom, and the United States as permanent members.

During his US visit, Mr Modi will meet US President Joe Biden and discuss a range of issues related to bi-lateral relations, and also the developing situation in Afghanistan and the challenges.
