Ujjain: History-sheeter Vikas Dubey ? the prime accused for whom Uttar Pradesh Police had launched a manhunt of epic proportions after eight law-enforcement personnel attained martyrdom in a hail of gunfire on the intervening night of July 2 and 3 at Bikru village within Kanpur District''s Choubepur area ? was placed under arrest along with accomplices Bittu and Suresh during a comparatively low-key episode early Thursday in this divisional headquarters'' Mahakal Chowki limits.
While Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan heartily felicitated the state force, the incident was quickly lent political hues as the opposition Congress ? specifically erstwhile chief ministers Digvijaya Singh and Kamal Nath ? raised eyebrows over the entire sequence of events. "It appears to be a sponsored surrender in order to avoid an encounter by Uttar Pradesh Police. I am in possession of inputs that all this became possible by courtesy of a senior Bharatiya Janata Party leader," Mr Singh conveyed via social media.
Mr Nath called for a high-level inquiry as the episode "reeks of a political conspiracy." The Congress'' erstwhile state president Arun Yadav averred that the capitulation was impossible without political intervention even as former state minister PC Sharma demanded a Central Bureau of Investigation probe. Subsequent to the crucial police action, Mr Chouhan interacted over phone with his Uttar Pradesh counterpart Yogi Adityanath. While furnishing details, Mr Chouhan informed the other senior politician that the criminal ? on whom a purse of Rs 5 lakh had been announced ? would be handed over to that state''s police, it was officially learnt.
Home Minister Narottam Mishra described it as a collective feather in the cap for his officers and men. "We were on high alert right from the juncture the dastardly Choubepur area incident was perpetrated. Irrespective of whether an offender is notorious or petty, such persons cannot escape my officers'' clutches! Dubey had crossed every conceivable boundary of cruelty," he averred during an interaction with the press in the state capital.
A senior functionary of the state police disclosed that the lawbreaker was apprehended in the vicinity of this ancient temple town''s world-renowned Mahakaleshwar shrine when he was heading to ''pay his respects'' to the presiding deity. "Dubey was trying to enter the place of worship when he was recognised by vigilant security personnel. We were alerted and immediate action followed. The criminal attempted to flee, but in vain," the officer said. While being forced into a police vehicle, the unrepentant gangster turned to the crowd of onlookers and shouted in Hindi, "Main Vikas Dubey hoon, Kanpur waala (I am Vikas Dubey, the one from Kanpur!)" A related video went viral in social media.
The transgressor was interrogated by the Superintendent of Police himself. Uttar Pradesh Special Task Force sources said this morning that a team was heading here. It is yet unclear as to how and when Dubey reached here. A couple of days back, one of his relatives was taken into custody by Uttar Pradesh Police in Shahdol District.
