Lok Sabha Speaker meets counterpart from Mozambique
 
New Delhi: Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla held a bilateral meeting with Esperanca Laurinda Francisco Nhiuane Bias, Speaker of the Assembly of the Republic of Mozambique, at Parliament House Complex Wednesday.

A Parliamentary Delegation of the Assembly of the Republic of Mozambique led by Bias is ona three-day visit to India at the invitation of the Parliament of India. Birla expressed happiness at Bais's arrival soon after the election and swearing-in of the new President of India. He told the visiting delegation that they would be among the first foreign dignitaries to meet new President of India Draupadi Murmu.

Speaking about the bilateral relations between the two countries, Birla said that the visit of the Mozambique Parliamentary Delegation to India has ushered in a new era of Parliamentary cooperation between the two nations.

He said Mozambique is a strategic partner and a close trading partner for India, and Indian companies have invested heavily in Mozambique's LNG and mining sectors. Referring to India's prompt assistance after Cyclone Idai, which hit Mozambique in March 2019, Birla said that it is an important reflection of the friendly relations between the two countries. He also mentioned India's assistance to Mozambique in the form of vaccines as well as materials such as masks, sanitisers, PPE kits etc. to fight the COVID-19 pandemic. Bias meanwhile said India is leading the world in women empowerment, and mentioned the election of Murmu as the President.

Appreciating the support of India in the fight against terrorism in Mozambique, she said India has given constant support is helping Mozambique in maintaining peace in the country. She also said that regular visits of leaders between the two countries will further strengthen bilateral relations between the countries and Parliaments. The two Speakers also signed a Memorandum of Cooperation which aims to develop privileged relations between the Parliament Of India and Mozambique based on the principles of equality, reciprocity of benefits and mutual respect.
