Credit goes to my father: Shami after picking 200 Test wickets

Centurion, Mohammed Shami on Tuesday credited his father for his success after becoming the only fifth bowler to take 200 wickets in Indian Test history.

The 31-year-old achieved the feat on Day 3 of the first Test between India and South Africa at Centurion.

"I want to give the credit to my father because I come from a village where there were no facilities," said Shami in a virtual press conference after the day's play.

"My father used to send me 30 kms far or sometimes accompany me for cricket. It was my father and brother who backed me. I am here because of them."

The dismissal of Kagiso Rabada marked the 200th Test wicket as well as five-fer for the Indian fast bowler. Rabada got an outside edge and wicket-keeper Rishabh Pant caught the South African behind the stumps.

Shami joined the elite club which is led by the 1983 World Cup winning captain Kapil Dev (434). The second, third and fourth spots in the table are occupied by Zaheer Khan (311), Ishant Sharma (311), and Javagal Srinath (236).

"No sportsman can ever imagine what he can do in the future when he is a kid or a struggler.

"You have only one dream to become an Indian player or play with those players whom you used to watch on TV. Only hard work is in your hands. And if you work hard, you get the desired result," Shami signed off.
