Djokovic donates ventilators to Serbia, praises ties with China

Belgrade: World number one tennis player Novak Djokovic announced a valuable donation to Serbia in respiratory ventilators at Friday''s video press conference, and sent a touching statement of gratitude to China for assisting and advising his homeland over COVID-19 outbreak. In an online live exchange with journalists, Djokovic greeted and congratulated medical staff in Serbia and around the world for coping with the COVID-19 disease and trying to help people, announcing a donation worth 1 million euro to buy respiratory ventilators and other medical supplies. "This is a very unpredictable situation, with situation and source of information changing on daily basis.

Unfortunately, the number of diseased people is growing each day, so Jelena, myself, and our foundation decided to find out what is the best way to donate our resources, time, knowledge, money ... whatever it takes to support the health of people across Serbia," he said. Djokovic explained that his uncle Goran Djokovic managed to secure the ventilators directly from manufacturers in China, where he has business ties. Answering a question from Xinhua about China-Serbia cooperation in facing the crisis, Djokovic praised their all-weather friendship, and mutual solidarity in this global pandemic.

"Not just in this COVID-19 outbreak, but throughout history they proved as great friends, always with us when the times were difficult, and of course China''s help means a lot to us not only in supplies and equipment, but most of all their expertise. I saw that their medical team arrived several days ago, bringing lots of experience on how to handle this difficult situation, because they were the first hit by the coronavirus. We thank them from our hearts and hearts of all our people," he said. The famous tennis player said he is enjoying free-time with his wife and children and handling house chores at Marbella in Southern Spain, and plans to advise people trough social networks how to maintain a good mood and stay in shape.

"We have been spending quality time with our children, and I cannot remember that I had time for such moments since I became a father ... so much weeks in a row spent at home together with Jelena and children. I am used to frequent travels because of my job and we have been enjoying the bright side of it," he said. Jelena Djokovic, wife of the tennis player in charge of the Novak Djokovic Foundation said that they found solution together with Serbian government to get adequate ventilators as soon as possible, and invited people to donate money to expand the project further.
