| Shami abused, Facebook moves swiftly to shield him |

New Delhi, Facebook has moved swiftly to shield Indian bowler Mohammad Shami from the abuse on social media following India's humiliating defeat at the hands of Pakistan in T20 World Cup match and vowed to take action against those violating its community standards.
The social media giant noted that it has recently announced updates to its 'bullying and harassment policy' to increase protection for all the public figures.
“No one should have to experience abuse anywhere, and we don’t want it on our platforms. We quickly introduced measures to remove the comments that directed abuse at an Indian cricketer and we’ll continue to take action against those that violate our Community Standards," a Facebook spokesperson told UNI.
The statement came amidst severe attack on Shami on social media after India lost to Pakistan by 10 wickets in Dubai last night, the first defeat faced by the men in Blue in a World Cup cricket encounter. Some people have hurled religious abuses at Shami.
"Additionally, we have tools like Hidden Words that protect you from having to see bullying comments and abuse in your Direct Message requests, and Limits, which protects you when you experience or anticipate a rush of abusive comments and messages,” the Facebook spokesperson added.
According to Facebook's policy, it does not allow attacks on people based on their protected characteristics, which includes race, religion, nationality or sexual orientation. This includes the use of emojis when used in a hateful context.
Facebook’s policies complement tools they’ve built in their apps to prevent, stop and report bullying and harassment online. These tools empower people to manage unwanted or abusive interactions like blocking or unfollowing someone on Facebook and Instagram and Restrict, Hidden Words and Limits on Instagram.
