Sindhu to miss BWF Worlds due to injury

New Delhi: Former world champion shuttler P V Sindhu will miss the upcoming BWF World Championships after suffering a stress fracture injury on the left ankle.

Sindhu sustained the injury while playing at the recently concluded Commonwealth Games in Birmingham.

Taking to Twitter on Saturday, she said: "While I am on the high of winning a gold medal at the cwg for India, unfortunately I have to pull out of the world championships.

"I felt pain and there was an injury scare at the quarter finals of the CWG, but with the help of my coach, physio and trainer, I decided to push as far as I could.

"The pain was unbearable during and post the finals. Hence I rushed for an MRI as soon as I got back to Hyderabad. The doctors confirmed a stress fracture on my left foot and recommend a rest for few weeks. I should be back to training in a few weeks."

The ace shuttler has five medals in the World championships, including a gold which she clinched in 2019, and two silver and two bronze medals.

Sindhu recently won her maiden gold medal at the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, after defeating Michelle Li of Canada 21-15, 21-13 in the women’s singles final.

This was the fifth medal at CWG for the 27-year-old shuttler, having won mixed team silver in 2022 and 2018. She also has a silver and a bronze in singles from the 2018 and 2014 editions.
