Bujumbura: At least 38 people died in a landslide that occurred in Cibitoke province of northwestern Burundi, following Wednesday's heavy rain, an official said here on Thursday.
According to Pierre Nkurikiye, Spokesperson of the Ministry of Public, the death toll was recorded from three localities of the province, situated in north of the commercial capital Bujumbura, Xinhua reported.
The authorities recovered a total of 22 bodies from Nyuempundu, three from Gikomero and 13 from Rukombe hill. Heavy rains started on Wednesday, damaging many houses as well, Mr Nkurikiye said.
The toll could rise as the rains continued in the landlocked country. Relief and rescue operations were continuing, he added.
