Israel military revising operational plans against Iran

Tel Aviv: A senior general of the Israel Army on Wednesday warned that the attack plans against Iran were being revised, stating that US return to the 2015 nuclear accord with Tehran would be 'wrong'.

Addressing the Tel Aviv University's Institute for National Security Studies, Israeli Lieutenant-General Aviv Kochavi said the decision by Israel to change its plans was initiated, after Iran restarted its nuclear programme in recent months.

''In light of this fundamental analysis, I have instructed the Israel Defence Forces to prepare a number of operational plans, in addition to those already in place.

''It will be up to the political leadership, to decide on the implementation, but these plans need to be on the table,'' he added.

The comments are being seen as a signal to new US President Joe Biden, to tread cautiously in any diplomatic engagement with Iran, especially with regards to the nuclear deal.

''A return to the 2015 nuclear agreement, or even if it is a similar accord with several improvements, is bad and wrong from an operational and strategic point of view,'' said Mr Kochavi.

Biden's predecessor, Donald Trump, had abandoned the nuclear agreement in 2018, which was welcomed by Israel Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who criticised the sanctions relief it offered to Iran and warned of the likelihood of Iranian nuclear arms development, after its expiration.
