Sri Lanka presidential candidates get ready for crucial elections

Colombo: The South Asian island nation’s potential presidential candidates are flexing for the upcoming presidential elections next Wednesday.

Speaker Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena told reporters that nominations for the election of a new President would be held on 19 and a new President elected on July 20 after he chaired a meeting of leaders of political parties represented in Parliament today.

Former Minister Dullas Alahapperuma of the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna party will contest for the Presidency when Parliament calls for nominations next week while the SLPP will support the candidacy of Acting President Ranil Wickremesinghe.

The election is scheduled to take place on July 20 in Parliament, General Secretary Sagara Kariyawasam told media.

The Bar Association of Sri Lanka urged MPs that they must do everything in their power to prevent Sri Lanka from plungig into further chaos and to restore social, political and economic stability. "The need of the hour is to take decisions based on the best interests of the country and not the personal or political interests of any individual or political party," it said in a statement.

The Indian High Commission in Colombo said in a statement that India reiterated that it supports an early political solution in Sri Lanka through democratic means and values and a constitutional framework.

IMF also in a statement said that they are hoping for a resolution of the current turmoil in Sri Lanka in order to resume the discussions on an IMF-supported programme.

After President Gotabaya Rajapaksa’s resignation, the Delegation of the European Union to Sri Lanka reiterated its call to all parties to act responsibly, in the interest of the people of Sri Lanka and to ensure that further acts of violence are prevented, in order to pave the way to a solution to the current crisis.
