Wayanad: Parents and students of the Sarvajan Higher Secondary School in Sulthan Bathery staged a protest against the alleged negligence on the part of the school authorities over the death of a nine-year old girl of snakebite inside the classroom. The agitators blocked the Deputy Director of Education who came to the school to inquire into the incident. A fifth-standard student of the school, Shehla Sherin, was bitten by a poisonous snake inside the class on Wednesday and died at a private hospital. Shehla''s parents had alleged that the school authorities did not rush her to the hospital soon after the snake bite.

According to source,s the hospital authorities suggested serum vaccination but parents of the students demanded shifting of her to medical college hospital. The District collector had sought a report on the incident. Meanwhile, the media crew who made it to the school and the particular classroom where the incident occurred found many holes on the floor and wall of the classroom. Students is reported to have complained that the student was not taken to hospital immediately even after her classmates told the teachers about the snakebite.

They also complained that they were not allowed to wear chappal inside the classroom. However, the school authorities said proper attention was given to the victim and was rushed to the hospital for medical care. According to sources, the lack of a paediatric ventilator in the district hospital has also contributed in the death of the student who breathed her last while transporting her to Kozhikode medical college hospital. Wayanad is said to be the only district in Kerala where such a facility is not available.
