Delhi CM meets ace chess player Tania Sachdev, asks Sisodia to felicitate her

New Delhi, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal met with Chess World Championship Silver Medallist Tania Sachdev on Tuesday and congratulated her for bringing laurels to the country by winning a silver medal at the World Chess Championship, the office of Chief Minister said.

Expressing pride over Sachdev's feat, Kejriwal said that his government will work towards ensuring that Chess regains its popularity among people, it added.

Upon learning that Tania Sachdev hadn’t been felicitated by the state for her performance yet. Kejriwal immediately called Deputy Chief Minister and Sports Minister Manish Sisodia in and directed him to felicitate her as per protocol and also ensure all kinds of possible support to her.

"You and your team have made the whole country proud with your stellar performance. We have to work together to make chess reach every household of the state and bring back the fame the sport held. The Delhi Government will provide any support that is required for this cause," Kejriwal praised the ace chess player.

During this meeting, Tania Sachdev spoke to the Chief Minister in detail about her performance all over the world. She also shared how hard she worked towards realising her dreams since her childhood, according to the statement shared by CM's office.

Kejriwal also said that the Delhi Government is very serious about promoting all kinds of sports.

"For this purpose, we have always been ready to give all possible help to the players. To promote sports, our government has established a Sports University in Delhi. There is only one ambition we have for this university, which is to develop players who win medals. Through this university, we want to produce many players of international level, who can make India proud by winning the maximum number of medals. I believe when this university will start functioning, players from all over the country will come here and become a part of our team," he added.

Tania Sachdev has a brilliant track record in national and international chess championships and is also an Arjuna Awardee. She was an instrumental part of the Indian team that won the Women’s World Team Chess Championship in Spain. She had also recently won the bronze medal at the 2021 Chess Olympics.
