Gokulam Kerala win Durand Cup for first time

Kolkata: Marcus Joseph brace earned Kerala Gokulam the 129th Durand Cup with 2-1 win over city giants Mohun Bagan in the final at the Salt Lake Stadium here on Saturday. The Kerala champions deserved win over the Mariners not only made the southern outfit richer by Rs 40 lakh for winning but their all round footballing performances are a signal for the rivals across the country in coming tournaments as they defeated East Bengal in previous semi finals on penalties.

Captain Marcus Joseph, who emerged the highest scorers of 11 goals in five matches including two hattricks in the league stage, took his visiting side onto lead scoring from a spot kick in the injury time of first half. Kerala Gokulam were awarded a penalty when Bagan goalkeeper Debjit Mazumder floored advancing Henry Kisseka and Marcus Joseph converted with his left footed shot. Kerala Buttressed their lead six minutes later in the second half when Marcus sped past a couple of defenders and booted home to score his 11th goal of the tournament and won the golden boot for being the highest goal getter.

The home team reduced the margin in the 62nd minute when Salva Chammoro headed in as the local fans rose to the feet for the first time in anticipation for a return into the contest, But the visitors held their fort intact and forced Mohun Bagan to be happy with the runners up trophy and prize money of Rs 20 lakh. At the fag end Fran Morante, who was on the Bagan bench, was red-carded for shouting at the referee and linesman. as the local side thought a penalty was denied by the referee. Earlier in the 87th minute Jestin George was red carded as Kerala down to 10 men. Jestin received a second yellow card for a terrible tackle on Kima.
