Japan Open: Prannoy sail into QF, Srikanth out
 
Osaka:HS Prannoy sailed through to the men’s singles quarterfinals at the Japan Open Super 750 badminton tournament after beating 2021 world champion Loh Kean Yew of Singapore here on Thursday.

Prannoy got better of former world champion and eighth-seed with Singaporean with 22-20, 21-19 win in a match that lasted for 44 minutes.

This was Prannoy's third win over the the Singaporean in four meetings.

He will next face Chou Tien Chen of Chinese Taipei in the quarterfinals. Chou won the bronze medal at last week’s world championships after making it to the semifinals, where he fell to eventual champion Viktor Axelsen.

Prannoy has beaten Chen in their last two meetings, but overall, he is trailing 3-4 in head-to-head record.

The-30-year-old shuttler is the only India left in the fray as former world no. 1 Kidambi Srikanth knocked out after a 10-21, 16-21 defeat at the hands of local favourite Kanta Tsuneyama.

Srikanth, who is CWG 2022 bronze medallist, earlier defeated the All England champion Lee Zii Jia in the previous round.
