Kolkata: Union Home minister Amit Shah on Sunday thanked the ECI for conducting peaceful first polling in Bengal and claimed that the BJP would win at 26 out of 30 seats
that went for the poll on Saturday.
Addressing a media conference in New Delhi, Mr Shah reiterated that the saffron brigade would emerge victoriously with over 200 seats in West Bengal's 294-seat assembly elections and to serve a double engine government, both in this state and neighbouring Assam.
In Assam the BJP would win 37 seats out of 47 seats that went in the first phase poll there, said Mr Shah and congratulated the Election Commission of India for conducting peaceful polling.
He said while Bengal recorded 84 per cent polling, Assam had 79 pc and also thanked party leaders and workers to mobilise support for a double engine government under the leadership of PM Narendra Modi.
'BJP will form a government in West Bengal with more than 200 seats.
We have got clear indications that BJP will win 26 seats out of 30 for which the elections were held on Saturday in West Bengal," Mr Shah said.
Mr Shah said, "I want to thank people of both the states for voting for us. Voter turnout shows enthusiasm in people."
He said for the first time in many years that was not a single death on the election day in Bengal, which had been known for election-related violence.
"Yesterday, after many years, the polling process was held without any incident of violence in West Bengal. I want to thank the women of West Bengal for polling in favour of the BJP. BJP will form government in West Bengal with more than 200 seats," the Home Minister said.
"After discussions with booth level workers and party leaders, I can say out of 30 seats in West Bengal we will win more than 26 seats.
We have got clear indications that BJP will win more than 37 seats out of 47 seats in Assam," Mr Shah said.
He also went on to thank the Election Commission for conducting
peaceful polls in "violence-prone West Bengal."
"I want to appeal to the people of Nandigram, from where CM Mamata Banerjee is contesting polls, to vote for change in West Bengal," Mr Shah said while asked about the fate of BJP candidate Suvendu Adhikari.
A voter turnout of 84.13% was recorded in West Bengal and 72.14% in Assam till 5 PM on Saturday in the first phase of assembly elections in these states, the Election Commission said.
Voting was held in 30 assembly constituencies in West Bengal and 47 seats in Assam in this phase.
Bengal has a 2nd phase poll on April 1 for 30 seats in the districts
Bankura, Medinipur West and East and S 24 Parganas.
