New Delhi, Congress on Tuesday attacked Yogi Adityanath-led BJP government in Uttar Pradesh on one year of the 'infamous' Hathras incident, accusing the government of threatening the victim's family instead of giving justice.
In a series of tweets in Hindi, Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi wrote, "A year ago today, a horrific incident of rape had happened in Hathras. UP government instead of giving justice and security to the family, had threatened them and snatched the family's rights to perform the last rites of their daughter."
Gandhi alleged government officials and BJP leaders had made statements that there was no 'rape' and the entire machinery was engaged in character assassination of the victim.
"How can you expect sensitivity from the head of government who has a bad approach on crime against women ? Anyway, UP CM is anti-women. He had said women should not be left free," the Congress leader said in an apparent reference to Yogi.
Meanwhile, Congress MP Rahul Gandhi in a social media post wrote, "The wait for justice continues. Hathras's daughter, country's daughter!."
On September 14, 2020, a 19-year-old Dalit girl was allegedly gangraped by four men in Hathras. She was strangled with her dupatta. She succumbed to injuries in Delhi's Safdarjung Hospital after two weeks.
