New Delhi, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla on Wednesday said India is committed toprovide equal opportunities for women in education, health and employment.Participating in the Fifth World Conference of Speakers of Parliament (5WCSP) in Vienna, Birlaunderlined that the nation is convinced that the pursuit of gender equality has vast positive implications for society and is crucial to achieving sustainable development.Birla also noted that in India, women are working as bureaucrats, writers, entrepreneurs, scientists,and social activists etc.Referring to the Constitutional provisions of India, he said all citizens of India, whether men or women, are equal before law, and also enjoy equal protection of laws.'Our Constitution empowers every citizens without discriminating on the basis of gender,' Birla said.Highlighting the legislative framework for women empowerment, he said several progressive legislations have been enacted in India which have strengthened democratic, constitutional and fundamental rights of women.
