(New Delhi, Jan26, 2019): India''s star wrestler Bajrang Punia, football captain Sunil Chhetri, former cricketer Gautam Gambhir and ace table tennis player Sharath Kamal will be conferred prestigious Padma Shri Award, the government on Friday announced the name of the Padma awardees 2019 on the eve of the 70th Republic Day.
Bajrang Punia has won gold at Asian Games and Commonwealth and has to his credit bronze and silver at World Championship in 2013 and 2018 in Budapest. The star wrestler was not happy after being left out of prestigious Kel Ratna award last year. Former cricketer Gautam Gambhir is best remembered for his precious knock in the finals of India''s World T20 win in 2007 and the 2011 World Cup title triumph in 2011.
Indian football captain Chhetri is the second highest goal scorer for the country at international level. Among the awardees also are Ajay Thakur (kabaddi), Prashanti Singh (basketball), Harika Dronavalli (chess) and Bombayla Devi (archery). While, mountaineer Bachendri Pal has been conferred with the Padma Bhushan.
