Illegal Child adoption case: Court hands over child to mother

Thiruvananthapuram, The controversial illegal child adoption case came to an end after the Family Court here on Wednesday handed over the baby boy to his mother who alleged that his father took away the child soon after her delivery.

Before pronouncing the verdict, Judge Biju Menon directed the Child Welfare Committee to bring the child to the court and summoned the doctor to his chamber to verify all the medical records proving the child's biological parents and DNA test results.

The child was brought to the court with police protection. The Government also instructed the pleader to take necessary steps to hand over the child to its mother immediately.
Talking to newspapers here, Anupama Chandran said she will continue her strike till those who involved in the illegal child adoption are punished.

Meanwhile, a inquiry report in this regard was submitted to Health Minister Veena George by the Director of Child Development, who also placed a copy of it before the court.

On Sunday last, the child was brought here from Prakasam district of Andhra Pradesh.
A four-member team of the Kerala Police and the Kerala Child Welfare Committe had received the baby from the Andhra Pradesh-based couple, who adopted the child from Kerala earlier.

Later, according to the direction by the Child Welfare Committee, DNA tests were conducted on the child and Anupama Chandran to found the biological parents. The medical tests were conducted at the Rajiv Gandhi Centre for Biotechnology here.

Earlier, Anupama staged a dharna in front of the State Secretariat alleging that her newborn baby was taken away by her family, a CPI(M) leader, who later allegedly handed over the child to the couple in Prakasham district of Andhra Pradesh.

Later, she began a dharna in front of the office of the Child Welfare Committee seeking justice.
She alleged that the ruling CPI(M) has taken over the law by violating the adoption law, leading to the handing over of the child to the couple in Andhra Pradesh.

Child Welfare Committee general secretary Shiju Khan and Child Welfare Council chairperson N Sunanda were removed from their posts following her complaint.

Meanwhile, Opposition leader VD Satheesan alleged that the ruling CPI(M) and the Child Welfare Committee coming under Chief Minister's portfolio, were responsible for the illegal child adoption, denying the basic rights of a woman and her child.
