Kerala HC bans public meeting of more than 50 people

Kochi, Kerala High Court on Friday banned all public meetings and conferences having more than 50 people in Kasaragod district for a week citing rising number of Covid cases.
Division Bench of Justice Vinod Chandran and Justice C Jayachandran issued an interim order in this regard while hearing a Public Interest Litigation.

The banning of the public meetings resulted into the winding up of the CPI(M)'s District Conference in Kasaragod district on Friday. The party conference was inaugurated with the participation of a large number of people on Friday.
Earlier, Kasaragod District Collector Bhandari Swagat Ranveer Chand imposed a ban on all kinds of public meetings in view of rising number of Covid cases. However, later this order was revoked by the Collector following a high level meeting chaired by the Chief Minister.

The norms for imposing ban have also been changed in the meeting. Instead of TPR, the number of hospital admissions were taken into consideration for imposing the ban.
Opposition parties alleged that the Collector revoked the order under the political pressure of the ruling party which also made changes in the norms for imposing ban for the smooth conduct of the ongoing party district conferences in the State.
After the issue became a controversy, Kasaragod District collector Bhandari Swagat Ranveer Chand has decided to go on leave from January 22 to February 1.
The collector who handed over the charge to the ADM said she is taking leave for personal reasons.
