Kottayam: Malayalam playwright, actor and Director P Balachandran passed away at his residence in Vaikom on Monday. He was 70 and is survived by his wife and two children. Balachandran was under treatment at a private hospital in Kochi for brain fever for about eight months, family sources said.
He is best known for the play ''Paavam Usman'' for which he won the ''Kerala Sahitya Akademi Award'' and ''Kerala Professional Nataka Award'' in 1989 and had scripted many Malayalam films including Ulladakkam, Pavithram, Agnidevan, Punaradhivasam and Kammatti Paadam.
He had acted in the film Trivandrum Lodge. His directorial debut was "Ivan Megharoopan" which won several honours at the Kerala State Film Awards in 2011.
