Thiruvananthapuram, Dr AS Kiran Kumar, former Chairman of ISRO has called for a stronger Academia-Industry collaboration in the space sector in which the motto of ‘Space for Earth’ has been shifted to ‘Space for Space’. Kiran Kumar, who is also member of Space Commission, said strong industry collaboration would result in making outer space a major economic resource and make our country a super power in the sector. Delivering the 7th Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam Lecture, in connection with the 15th Foundation Day of Indian Institute of Space Science and Technology (IIST), Thiruvananthapuram, Dr. Kiran Kumar emphasized the need for utilizing the intellectual resources of prestigious institutes like IIST in setting up short, medium and long term projects for the benefit of Indian Space programme. IIST-ISRO Interface meeting, IIST-Industry meet, IIST @ Schools, various programmes organized by Alumni and Hindi Day Celebrations were held as part of Foundation Day celeberations. As part of the Institute’s efforts to give back to society, an outreach program viz., IIST @ Schools was organised along with an NGO viz., Kumari Aruvial Perumai. 206 students from different schools of Kanyakumari district participated in the programme on-line. Dr. BN Suresh, Chancellor of the Institute chaired the plenary session. S. Somanath, Director IIST & VSSC, Dr. Sam Dayala Dev, Director IISU, Dr. YVN Krishnamurthy, Registrar IIST, Radhakrishnan Durairaj, Chairman and MD of New Space India Ltd (NSIL), Col. HS Sankar VSM (Retd)/ CMD Alpha Design Technologies were present. Scientific Secretary, ISRO, Director CBPO, Directors from other ISRO Centres and Units, dignitaries from ISRO HQ, Deans, Head of the Departments and faculty of IIST also participated in the events.
