Thiruvananthapuram: Young firebrand leader K Surendran has been named as the President of BJP Kerala Unit on Saturday. This was announced by BJP National President J P Nadda in New Delhi this morning. The President''s post was vacant after former president PS Sreedharan Pillai became the Governor of Mizoram on October 25. Mr Surendran was serving as State BJP General Secretary. Ms Sobha Surendran, AN Radhakrishnan and MT Ramesh are the other General Secretaries of the party.
The appointment came in the wake of party has to face the ensuing Local Self Government (LSG) poll. Born to Kunjiraman and Kalyani Amma on March 19, 1970 in Ulliyeri, Kozhikode, he has a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry from Zamorin''s Guruvayurappan College, Kozhikode. He started his political career through Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP).
During the earlier years of his political career, Mr Surendran held various positions such as Director North Malabar District Co-operative Marketing Society, President, Desa Seva Samskarika Kendram, Founder Director Board member National Yuva Cooperative Society and Advisory Board member of Nehru Yuva Kendra. He had actively taken part in agitations on Kovalam Palace issue in 2006, Adivasi Land issue in 2008, unemployment issue in 2009, land encroachment issue in 2011, Chakkittapara land issue in 2012, solar scam in 2013 and Sabarimala issue in 2018.
During his college days, Mr Surendran was a unit secretary of ABVP in Zamorin''s Guruvayurappan College. He was the ABVP organising secretary of Palakkad Nagar in 1991-92. The newly elected Kerala BJP President was the BJYM President of Wayanad district in 1992, State Secretary in 1995-98, BJYM General Secretary from 1993 and State President from 2003 to 2009. He was jailed for more than three weeks in connection with the Sabarimala agitation.
In the previous Lok Sabha election, he had contested from the Pathanamthitta seat and bagged 2.95 lakh votes and stood in third place.
